Σήκωσέ το, το γ....νο, δεν μπορώ,δεν μπορώ να περιμένω...

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Eurobasket 2005 championship winner:

GREECE!!!!

After an astonishing final, Greece has beaten Germany 78-62 and is the Eurobasket 2005 championship winner. It took 18 years (since the legendary Eurobasket 1987 final in Athens, where Greece had defeated the Soviet Union 103-101) for the Greek national basketball team to finish at the first position, but who cares?
I still remember the all-night celebrations back then, and I can only assume that in Syntagma and Omonia square in Athens, and everywhere in Greece, the party has already started. It was Athens then, now it is Belgrade! In fact, the coach of the 2005 team, Panayotis Yannakis, was a player in the 1987 one.
But now, a new page is written in Greek basketball history and a new legendary team is a fact.
To the players of the team, a great THANK YOU!!

Ευχαριστούμε μάγκες
Μας κάνατε πάλι πολύ περήφανους!

Not to mention the Euro cup and the Olympics last year. Is there no stopping these Greeks? The answer is clearly no.

And I, for one, welcome our new Greeks overlords. I'd like to remind them that as a student of ancient Greek, I can be useful to them in rounding up other non-Greeks to toil in their underground sugar caves...

(Sorry, prolonged Simpsons reference.)

Well, the gods have been smiling for sure....

Andrea: Greeks often complain about almost everything. So,it takes events like this one to make them really feel proud.

Aemilius: It is really rare for a national team to hold both the titles of European Champions in soccer and in basketball.I just hope that nothing stops us pass to the final round of World Cup next year in Germany. Now what are these "underground sugar caves" you are talking about? I guess it is not Plato's cave,is it?

Jenny: Hello there!!

Uhm, yes. Plato's cave. That's exactly what I was talking about. Because I'm not crazy. Really.
